This one's going to be a bit different. Since I was painting rapid-fire, far less emphasis was placed on starting one color, finishing it, and moving on. Instead, I would paint with what had been mixed, and was often jumping from unit to unit as I went. As a result, my notes are going to be very rough, and I wouldn't trust them at all!
I re-primed the unit black, after a failed experiment with Zenithal priming. I still think this was the right decision for this task.
Unit, primed |
For the first pass, I did the first layers of skin and fur. For the fur, I used 3 SS Camo Black Brown, 3 Dark Flesh, 1 Medium Grey, and 1/2 wolf grey. For the skin, I used 4 Dark Fleshtone, 2 Medium Grey, 1 Electric Blue, and 1 Black. I wanted the blue to make the grey skin stand out slightly from what was going to be a brownish-orange "woolly mammoth" shade for the fur, and Medium Grey went into both so they would seem to have a dirty, muddy shade - just like an actual rhino.

I did a the second layers on the skintone, then jumped into the blues.. For the fur, I used 2 Dark Fleshtone, 2 Medium Grey, and 1 Wolf Grey. For the skin, I used 2 Dark Fleshtone, 4 Medium Grey, 2 Electric Blue, and 1 Stonewall Grey.

After the blues were done, I went back and did a third layer on the skin and fur. These would be the last layers for CCKoWAWS, but I would come back later to finish highlighting. For the fur, I used 1 Medium Grey, 2 Elf Fleshtone, 1 Wolf Grey For the skin, I used 1 Medium Grey, 1 Bestial Brown, 1 Electric Blue, 1 Stonewall Grey

Once the challenge was over, I took a day off to recover, and then jumped right back in to see if I could finish the unit up.
For the fourth layer of fur, I used 1 Medium Grey, 2 Bone White, 2 Wolf Grey.
For the fourth layer of skin, I used 2 Stonewall Grey, 2 Wolf Trey, 1/2 Electric Blue, 1/2 Glacier blue.

For the fifth layer of fur, I simply added 2 Wolf Grey and 2 white to the previous layer.
For the fifth layer of skin, I used 2 Wolf Grey, 1 Electric Blue, and 2 Glacier Blue
For the sixth layer of fur, I mixed up 1 Bone White, 1 Wolf Grey and 4 White
I finished the sixth layer of skin with 2 Glacier Blue, 2 White.

Once the non-metallic metal was done, I came back in and did the wooden handles of their weapons, as well as the ice-head one warrior was wielding. At some point in the process, I also decided this unit needed to be a Stampede, so I made a new base that size and magnetized the unit to it.

Will you be describing the recipes for your painted Gabrax in a such a post? I really like the skin tone on those and I can't quite seem to get a red-ish skin tone right myself. Thanks!
